Let's get to the brass tax of the holidays, it's really NOT about presents. It's about spending time with loved ones and reconnecting. It's a celebration of life. Most people, especially parents (I'm included in that one!) want to get their loved ones everything their hearts desire. To be VERY honest with you the kids/teens I counsel aren't asking for big expensive things for the holidays. They ask for time with YOU. They want quality, enjoyable time with you. I don't remember the presents my parents got me as a kid. Seriously, I don't. I remember the huge family gatherings, playing with my cousins, seeing my parents laugh and enjoy themselves. So why do so many people over spend during the holidays? I suspect part of it is we have this bizarre idea that happiness comes with materialistic things. And some of it is to try to pay people back for not having time for them, so a new video game should fix that. Happiness doesn't come in a box with pretty paper and a bow. A toy doesn't make up for lost time. And being broke in January from buying all those presents doesn't make anyone happy.
So I highly suggest let your credit cards take a break and make time for your loved ones. Make cookies with the kids, pick up the phone and call someone who may need a shoulder to lean on, have lunch with a great friend. Time is priceless.
Be well, Be happy-

AMEN! I stopped all of this holiday gift nonsense a few years ago. While I do still get gifts for the kids, adults get a picture of me and hubby and I call it a day. It is ridiculous to spend all of the money you saved all year just for show. You are right. Quality time with family and friends is much more valuable.
